Harry Potter director Chris Columbus reflects on the pressure of casting the main characters in one of the greatest film series of all time.
Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry potter films, talks about the pressure he was under while casting one of the most iconic trios in the history of cinema. The eight films in the franchise released over a ten-year period, from 2001 to 2011. Together, the eight Harry potter the main series films have grossed $ 7.73 billion worldwide. They have been incredibly popular since their release, spawning a play, spinoff movies, and a section at Universal Studios theme parks. Warner Bros. ‘ the HBO Max streaming platform also capitalizes on Harry potter hype by posting exclusive content.
Now that the sorcerer’s stone is 20 years old, fans are talking about what could be the next step for the Wizarding World. Currently the Fantastic beasts the films, which are prequels to the original series set in America rather than Britain, are still ongoing. The third installment, Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore, is slated for release in 2022. Some fans have also called for an adaptation of the play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which resumes years later The Deathly Hallows and deals with Harry deciding to use a Time Turner for time travel. This allows fans to revisit some famous Harry potter moments, but a movie is expected to deal with the loss of some cast members, most notably Snape actor Alan Rickman.
Now Columbus talks about his experience with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. In an interview with Jake’s catches, Columbus mentions how quickly the pressure hit him that he should throw Harry and the others. He also talks about his meeting with author JK Rowling and the support she gave him. Check out the full quote below:
I was, you know, once I got the job, there was about 20 minutes, 20 seconds, of euphoria, and then I was filled with dread, anxiety because I knew the whole world was looking at this series of books. If I messed up, I would be in the witness protection program. So it was important for me to get it right, and I always had that anxious feeling when I went to meet JK Rowling and she said, âWhat’s your take on the movie? I talked about it for two and a half hours, and she said at the end of that conversation, “This is exactly how I see the movie. As a result of that, I felt a tremendous amount of self-confidence because it basically supported my view of the film.
It’s no surprise that Columbus felt the weight of the series on his shoulders. The book was immensely popular when it was released, so he knew how massive the project would be, and if he got the Harry potter badly started, he would never hear the end of it. Fortunately, Columbus found young actors who not only embodied the roles, but were able to carry the weight of a huge film franchise for a decade. The casting is undoubtedly one of the main reasons for the success of the films, especially since many viewers have been able to grow up with them over the course of the series.
While Columbus nailed the cast at the time, some have hinted at a potential reboot of the series, which is certainly one of the trickiest topics for fans. One of the most important parts of this hypothetical Harry potter the reboot would be the cast, and fans have some ideas on who the characters should play. But as of now, it doesn’t look like a reboot movie series is happening, and audiences can just enjoy the magic of Columbus’ casting in the original. Harry potter saga.
