Over $ 165,000 Raised for St. Clair County Council Against Child Abuse and Neglect

The Blue Water Area community raised a record amount for St. Clair County Council Against Abuse and Neglect during its Community Roof for Children last month.

The rooftop terrace raised over $ 165,000 for the council during the week-long event. Last year, Roof-Sitting raised $ 156,473, including donations after the Roof-Sitting ended, said Sherry Archibald, executive director of the St. Clair County Child Abuse and Neglect Board.

She said there were 602 individual donations during the week, as well as walk-in donations at their booth outside the MiMutual Mortgage building, which most likely brings the number of individual donations to nearly from 650.

“We are fortunate to live in a community that supports us and understands the scale and importance of the work we do,” she said. “We can’t say thank you enough. “

Archibald said the roof provides about a third of the council’s annual operating budget and funds programs the council would not otherwise be able to deliver.

Archibald said these programs include education programs, family advocacy services, trauma-focused mental health therapy and forensic interviews for alleged victims of abuse.

New programs added this year include a Teen Empowerment Yoga Series, which provides healing for victims of sexual abuse. Archibald said the program helps victims discover and appreciate their bodies after trauma.

Funds raised also support programs such as therapy groups and interactive journaling classes. While prevention is the top priority of the board, these programs help victims of abuse and neglect heal from their trauma and lead healthy lives, Archibald said.
