Theater of Dare is planning a series of summer camps for children – The Coastland Times

Theater of Dare, community theater in the Outer Banks, partners with Porkchop Productions to offer summer theater camps for children. Each of the five week-long sessions will feature its own unique theme and conclude with a performance.

“We wanted to get more young people involved in theatre, and summer camp is a great way to do that,” says TOD Chief Commercial Officer Kelsey Thompson. “Now that we have our own space, we have many plans to use it and expand our business, and the summer camp program is just one exciting part of that.”

Each camp consists of two sessions: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for 6-11 year olds and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for 12-17 year olds.

The camps scheduled with descriptions of each from Theater of Dare are:

June 13-17: Not Your Grandma’s Fairy Tales 1 – “Participants will explore character, direction, voice, diction, movement and more while bringing fairy tales to life and fabulously fractured and uniquely updated fables!

June 20-24: Ham Radio – “Attendees will learn the history of radio drama and delve into vocal acting, diction and accents to bring an on-air character to life!” Additionally, using Porkchop Production’s “Foley Sound Effects Studio”, we will use old school objects to add sound effects to the performance.

July 11-15: Musical Theater Mania! – “Participants will learn the music and choreography of some of Broadway’s most popular shows. With a history of famous composers and choreographers, it’s a complete musical theater experience!”

July 18-22: FX Makeup for the Stage – “Participants will learn the history of special effects theatrical makeup, how to create their own makeup design patterns, and implement techniques to create age, character, fantasy , the animal and (of course) gore gore! Each participant will receive their own Ben Nye makeup kit to keep!

August 8-12: Not Your Grandma’s Fairy Tales 2 – “Like the first camp session but with different stories – participants will spread their wings and let their imaginations run wild as they bring wacky stories from the page to the scene!

The cost of each session is $175 per participant, $200 for the catch-up session July 18-22. Attendance is limited and registration, now open, will close two weeks before a given session or when the course is full, whichever comes first. Camps will be held at the theater at 3848 N. Croatan Highway, MP 4 in Kitty Hawk.

One scholarship, awarded by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, will be available for each session. The scholarship covers the cost of the week and will be based on need and merit. Details are available on the registration form at

“Theatrical camp is one of our specialties,” says Stacey Maxwell, artistic director of Porkchop Productions, a traveling professional theater company for children. “Kids always have a blast; I can’t wait to get them involved in the performing arts!”
