Violence against women and children endemic to the Riau Islands: governor

Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (ANTARA) – Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad has drawn attention to the high number of cases of violence against women and children in the province.

Ahmad noted that women and children make up two-thirds of the total population of the Riau Islands, with most of them divided into family units.

With so many, women and children are subject to violence and discrimination, Ahmad noted Wednesday in Tanjungpinang.

“Therefore, collaboration and coordination among stakeholders must be carried out to gain the support of all parties in an effort to restore family functions,” he said.

The governor noted that the high rate of violence against children and women in the Riau Islands was in part due to the high mobility of the public. Endemic poverty and the unemployment rate were also factors triggering violence against women and children.

The increase in cases of violence against women and children is a testament to the weakness of family resilience. Thus, efforts to restore family functions are deemed necessary.

“To send information (on) the realization of children’s rights, parenting models and the role of families in the formation of quality kinship, for which we must promote (them) in accordance with efforts to improve the well- be part of the family thanks to the involvement of women in the economy, ”he stressed.

The governor also stressed the importance of working with community organizations, such as the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the Da’i Women’s Organization, so that the concept of protection of women and children can be accelerated by through religious activities.

He praised the economic development efforts initiated by the Office for Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control and Family Planning of the Riau Islands (DP3AP2KB), such as the development of ‘girls’ schools and micro-enterprises.

“However, what needs to be taken into account is the development of quality, both in terms of product and packaging. Indeed, our products are generally good, but the packaging is still lacking”, Ahmad said.

Riau Islands Bureau for Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control and Family Planning Chief Misni noted that violence against women and children has tend to increase in number over time. The types of violence and their modes also varied.
