At a regular meeting of the City of West Hollywood City Council on Monday, July 18, 2022, City Council approved Item 2.S. agreeing to co-sponsor a fundraiser for the film Van Ness Recovery House scheduled for Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The City has approved the use of Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park, waives facility usage fees and Plummer Park three-hour parking regulations (estimated $468 in waived fees). The city also authorizes the use of the city’s name and logo on invitations, programs and other supporting materials for the event. The Communications Department will use all appropriate communication tools to promote the events, including but not limited to the City’s website and social media tools.

The Van Ness Recovery House is the oldest recovery house serving the LGBT community in the country. The non-profit organization is on a mission to meet the critical and growing alcohol and drug addiction recovery needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Recovery House uses the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous and offers day and residential treatment, sober living, education, prevention and outreach services in a socially supportive, chemical-free environment. Services are accessible to everyone, regardless of ability to pay or HIV status.

The Van Ness Recovery House is celebrating 50 years of service to 2023 with various events capturing the history and diversity of the recovery community it has served for many decades.

On August 20, 2022, the Van Ness Recovery House will host a movie fundraiser at Fiesta Hall in Plummer Park from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The fundraiser is intended for members of the recovery community. It will be a fun and interactive film screening of Grease, with tickets available for purchase for $20. Proceeds from the event will help support the work of Van Ness Recovery House.

The City of West Hollywood has made it a priority to address addiction services by funding programs at various agencies and educating the public through community forums, innovative prevention campaigns, and an addiction services guide. The City contracted with Van Ness Recovery House from 1992 to 2008 for a variety of different recovery services. Hundreds of members of the West Hollywood community have received services from the agency and continue to access its programs. Van Ness has held similar fundraising events at Fiesta Hall in the past, including a screening of the musical Hairspray, which was a well-attended and successful event. Support for this event is consistent with current City policies and initiatives.
